The Tree Paintings
I grew up in a small farming
community in Wisconsin where the rolling hills were covered in maple forests
and the fields were filled with cows. The seasons were marked by
the colors of the trees – the greens of Summer, brilliant yellows and reds
of Fall, and the white trimmed browns of Winter.
As a teenager, I moved to
Colorado and immediately fell in love with the mountains and the aberrant
white of the Aspen groves. White is not one of Nature’s preferences,
and perhaps this uniqueness is what sparked my interest in these trees.
Though they appear white, their bark assumes an everchanging cast of subtle
colors and throughout the day their trunks shift from stark streaks of
light to gray ghosts at night. Every minute presents a new outlook.
New Mexico held a whole new
challenge with its freckled hills of pinon and juniper, and still contained
the lovely aspen groves of the mountains.
